In the realm of computer security, the act of gaining access to a system or program by verifying one's identity is commonly known as logging in. User credentials typically include a username and password, often referred to as a login, with modern systems requiring additional verification methods like email or SMS confirmation for enhanced security.
Social login enables users to utilize existing phone numbers or credentials from other platforms to access new websites or create accounts. Logging out, or signing off, is the process of ending a session when access is no longer required. Fingerprint login is a recent security measure used in banking applications.
Logging in allows users to access specific pages, websites, or applications that are restricted from unauthorized users. Once logged in, a login token can track the user's actions on the site. Logging out can be initiated by the user through various actions or can occur implicitly, such as closing a browser window or leaving a website.
Websites may have a return URL parameter to redirect users after logging in or out. When a user logs out of a site that uses session cookies, those cookies are typically deleted from the user's computer for security purposes.
